The Open Window
The night unfastens every chain,
And leaves the window bare.
The moon pours silver through the room,
As though it finds me there.
The ceiling loses all its weight,
The shadows cease to bind;
And somewhere in the quiet dark,
The walls fall far behind.
The stars forget their ancient laws,
The earth forgets my name;
The doors dissolve into the dark,
And nothing stays the same.
I drift where sleeping rivers dream,
Unmeasured, undefined;
A little piece of open sky,
With nothing left behind.
And if the dawn should call me back,
To all it asks of me,
I'll leave one window open still,
And let the darkness breathe.
