Algeria : The War That Exposed Everyone

لم يعد السؤال المطروح اليوم ما إذا كانت الجزائر ستخسر عاصمتها أم لا.

The question facing this war is no longer whether Algeria will lose its capital.

فالعواصم سقطت عبر التاريخ، والإمبراطوريات نفسها فقدت مدنها الكبرى ثم استعادت مكانتها. السؤال الحقيقي الذي تفرضه هذه الحرب هو سؤال آخر أكثر أهمية: ماذا تكشف هذه المعركة عن طبيعة التحالفات، وعن الخطاب الذي رافقها، وعن اللاعبين الذين وجدوا أنفسهم في قلبها؟

Capitals have fallen throughout history, and even great empires have lost their greatest cities before reclaiming their place in history. The real question raised by this war is far more important: what does this conflict reveal about alliances, the rhetoric surrounding it, and the players who found themselves at its center?

منذ بداية الهجوم المشترك، واجهت الجزائر تحالفًا متفوقًا في العدد والموارد والخبرة. ورغم ذلك، لم يتحقق الانهيار السريع الذي توقعه كثيرون. بل على العكس، تمكن لاعبون جزائريون، يشكل القادمون الجدد غالبيتهم الساحقة، من إيقاف التقدم في أكثر من مناسبة وفرض هزائم مؤلمة على جبهة إسبانيا. لم يكن ذلك نتيجة تفوق مادي، بل نتيجة إرادة قتال لم تكن محسوبة في تقديرات الخصوم.

Since the beginning of the joint offensive, Algeria has faced a coalition superior in numbers, resources, and experience. Yet the rapid collapse many predicted never materialized. On the contrary, Algerian players—most of them newcomers—managed on several occasions to halt enemy advances and inflict painful defeats on the Spanish front. This was not the result of material superiority, but of a fighting spirit many opponents failed to account for in their calculations.

لكن هذه الحرب كشفت حقيقة أخرى أكثر إحراجًا.

But this war has revealed another, far more uncomfortable truth.

فعندما تعرضت الجزائر لضغط وجودي، اختفى كثير ممن قدموا أنفسهم لسنوات باعتبارهم حلفاء. وحين أصبحت المعركة اختبارًا عمليًا لمعنى التضامن، فضّل البعض الصمت، وفضّل آخرون المراقبة، بينما كانت المدن تُحاصر والجبهات تُستنزف. وفي عالم الاستراتيجية، لا توجد لغة أكثر وضوحًا من الأفعال. فالحليف الذي لا يُرى في ساعة الخطر ليس حليفًا غائبًا فحسب، بل حقيقة سياسية انكشفت أمام الجميع.

When Algeria came under existential pressure, many who had presented themselves for years as allies simply disappeared. When the conflict became a practical test of solidarity, some chose silence while others chose observation, even as cities were besieged and defensive lines stretched to their limits. In the world of strategy, there is no language clearer than action. An ally absent in the hour of danger is not merely absent—it is a political reality exposed for all to see.

وفي المقابل، اختار بعض المشاركين في الحرب الانحدار بالنقاش من مستوى المنافسة الاستراتيجية إلى مستوى الاستفزاز الديني. تصريحات وشعارات تستحضر صراعات عقائدية عمرها قرون، وكأن أصحابها غير قادرين على تبرير إنجازاتهم العسكرية دون الاستناد إلى خطاب الكراهية. ومهما كانت نتائج المعارك، فإن هذا النوع من الخطاب لا يعبر عن قوة، بل عن أزمة ثقة؛ لأن المنتصر الحقيقي لا يحتاج إلى تبرير انتصاره بإهانة هوية الآخرين.

At the same time, some participants chose to drag the discussion from strategic competition into the realm of religious provocation. Statements and slogans invoking centuries-old religious conflicts suggest an inability to justify military achievements without relying on hostility and division. Whatever the outcome of the war, such rhetoric is not a sign of strength but of insecurity, for true victors do not need to diminish the identity of others to validate their success.

والحقيقة التي قد لا تعجب كثيرين هي أن سقوط العاصمة ـ إن حدث ـ لن يكون الحدث الأهم في هذه الحرب.

And the truth that may discomfort many is this: even if the capital falls, it will not be the defining event of this war.

الحدث الأهم هو أن مجموعة من اللاعبين الجدد، بإمكانات محدودة ودعم شبه معدوم، أجبرت خصومًا متفوقين على خوض معركة أطول وأصعب مما كانوا يتوقعون. والحدث الأهم هو أن هذه الحرب كشفت من حضر عندما كان الحضور مكلفًا، ومن اكتفى بإلقاء الخطب من خلف الخطوط الآمنة.

The defining event is that a largely inexperienced group of players, operating with limited resources and minimal support, forced stronger opponents into a longer and more difficult struggle than anticipated. The defining event is that this war revealed who showed up when showing up carried a cost, and who preferred speeches from the safety of the rear.

قد تتغير الخريطة خلال الساعات القادمة.

The map may change in the coming hours.

قد تسقط العاصمة.

The capital may fall.

وقد تُرفع أعلام جديدة فوق مدن كانت حتى الأمس تحت السيادة الجزائرية.

New flags may rise above cities that until yesterday were under Algerian control.

لكن هناك شيئًا واحدًا لن تستطيع أي قوة على الخريطة مصادرته: الحقيقة.

But there is one thing no army, alliance, or coalition can seize from the battlefield: the truth.

وحقيقة هذه الحرب أن الجزائر لم تُهزم بسبب نقص الإرادة، بل لأنها وُضعت في مواجهة تحالفات كاملة بينما تُركت لتقاتل وحدها. أما الذين ما زالوا يقاتلون حتى اللحظة الأخيرة، فقد ضمنوا لأنفسهم مكانًا لا تمنحه الخرائط ولا تنتزعه الهزائم.

And the truth of this war is that Algeria was not defeated by a lack of will. It was placed against entire coalitions while being left to fight largely on its own. Those who continue fighting until the final hour have secured something no map can grant and no defeat can erase.

مكانًا في الجانب الذي قاوم.

A place among those who resisted.

الجزائر لم تكن الطرف الذي احتاج إلى حشد التحالفات لإثبات نفسه. ولم تكن الطرف الذي احتاج إلى استدعاء الكراهية الدينية لتبرير أفعاله. ولم تكن الطرف الذي اكتشف حدوده عند أول اختبار حقيقي.

Algeria was not the side that needed to assemble vast coalitions to prove its worth. Nor was it the side that needed religious hostility to justify its actions. Nor was it the side that discovered its limits at the first true test.

بل كانت الطرف الذي أجبر الجميع على كشف أنفسهم.

Instead, it was the side that forced everyone else to reveal themselves.

كشف قوة خصومه.

It revealed the strength of its adversaries.

وكشف هشاشة بعض تحالفاته.

It exposed the fragility of some of its alliances.

وكشف ضيق أفق أولئك الذين ظنوا أن الإهانة يمكن أن تكون بديلًا عن الإنجاز.

And it exposed the narrow vision of those who believed that insult could serve as a substitute for achievement.

ولهذا، فإن السؤال الحقيقي ليس ما الذي ستخسره الجزائر اليوم. بل ما الذي تعلمه الجميع منها.

Therefore, the real question is not what Algeria may lose today, but what everyone else has learned from it.

لأن الخرائط تتغير.

Because maps change.

أما الحقائق التي تكشفها الحروب الكبرى، فتبقى أطول عمرًا من الخرائط نفسها.

But the truths revealed by great wars often outlive the maps themselves.

And we shall honor those who remain faithful to their pledges.

And we shall bring down every tyrant who persists in defiance.

وَيَرَى جِيلُنَا، خَافِقَاتِ الْبُنُودْ

Our generation shall see the banners flying.

وَيَرَى نَجْمُنَا، لِلْعُلَا فِي صُعُودْ

And shall see our star rising toward glory.

هَكَذَا هَكَذَا، هَكَذَا سَنَعُودْ

Thus, yes, thus—we shall return.

فَاشْهَدِي يَا سَمَاءُ، وَاكْتُبَنْ يَا وُجُودْ

So bear witness, O sky, and write it into existence.

إِنَّنَا لِلْعُلَا، إِنَّنَا لِلْخُلُودْ

We are destined for glory; we are destined for immortality.
