One of the strangest conflicts in history began over a wooden bucket.
In 1325, tensions between the rival Italian city of Bologna and Modena were already simmering. These weren’t just casual disagreements... they were part of a larger power struggle tied to factions supporting the Pope and the Holy Roman Emperor. War was basically inevitable.
According to history, Modenese soldiers raided Bologna and stole a bucket from a water well.
They sliced the rope with a sword and took the bucket.
Bologna demanded it back. Modena refused. Pride took over, and suddenly that petty act turned into a full-scale conflict known as the War of the Bucket.
The result wasn’t funny at all. Thousands of soldiers fought at the Battle of Zappolino, where Modena, despite being smaller, defeated Bologna decisively. Modena kept the bucket as a trophy.
To this day, a bucket (or at least what is claimed to be it) is displayed in Modena as a symbol of victory.
