1. 1997: The Funeral of Princess Diana – Over two billion people worldwide tuned in to watch the funeral service of Diana, Princess of Wales, today. The solemn procession through London was highlighted by Elton John performing a rewritten, emotional rendition of "Candle in the Wind" inside Westminster Abbey, which went on to become one of the best-selling physical singles of all time.

   

2. 1901: The Assassination of William McKinley – U.S. President William McKinley was shot at point-blank range today by anarchist Leon Czolgosz inside the Temple of Music at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. Czolgosz hid a revolver beneath a handkerchief wrapped around his hand, firing twice into the president's abdomen during a public handshake line.

   

3. 1522: The First Global Circumnavigation – The Victoria, a battered wooden ship carrying just 18 surviving crew members under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano, limped into port in Spain today. It was the sole remaining vessel of Ferdinand Magellan's original five-ship expedition, completing the first recorded voyage all the way around the world.

   

4. 1622: The Sinking of the Nuestra Señora de Atocha – A violent hurricane off the Florida Keys battered and sank the Spanish treasure galleon Atocha today. Loaded with 40 tons of gold, silver, and emeralds, the ship plunged to the ocean floor, where its massive fortune lay untouched for over 350 years until salvager Mel Fisher located the main wreck in 1985.

   

5. 1916: The Invention of the Modern Supermarket – Entrepreneur Clarence Saunders opened the world's very first self-service grocery store, Piggly Wiggly, in Memphis, Tennessee today. Prior to this layout, customers handed a list to a clerk who gathered items behind a counter; Saunders revolutionized retail by forcing shoppers to walk down wooden aisles with baskets and choose products off the shelves themselves.
