1846: The Lockstitch Sewing Machine Patent – American inventor Elias Howe was granted a U.S. patent for his revolutionary mechanical sewing machine today. Utilizing a lockstitch design powered by a point-eyed needle working in tandem with a shuttle, Howe's creation automated garment manufacturing and laid the industrial groundwork for modern mass textile production.

1898: The Assassination of Empress Sisi – Empress Elisabeth of Austria was stabbed to death on the promenade of Lake Geneva today by Italian anarchist Luigi Lucheni. Lucheni initially planned to kill a French prince, but upon discovering his original target had canceled, he impaled the Empress through the chest with a sharpened four-inch needle file.

1977: The Final Guillotine Execution – Hamida Djandoubi, convicted of torture and murder, became the last person to be executed by guillotine in France today. Carried out at Baumettes Prison in Marseille, the execution marked the final official use of the head-chopping apparatus anywhere in the western world prior to France abolishing capital punishment in 1981.

1897: The World's First Drunk Driving Arrest – 24-year-old London cab driver George Smith slammed his electric taxicab straight into the side of a building at this day. After admitting to drinking four pints of beer before getting behind the wheel, he pleaded guilty and was fined 20 shillings, making him the first person in history legally convicted of drunk driving.

2025: The Rooftop Assassination of Charlie Kirk – Right-wing activist and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was shot and killed by a rooftop sniper today while speaking at an outdoor debate event at Utah Valley University. A single bullet fired from a .30-06 rifle struck him in the neck from 140 yards (128 meters) away, sparking massive national political shockwaves.
