1850: Congress Passes the Fugitive Slave Act – The U.S. Congress enacted the controversial law today, compelling federal marshals and ordinary citizens in free states to assist in capturing suspected escaped slaves under severe financial penalty.

1851: First Edition of The New York Times – The inaugural issue of The New-York Daily Times was printed today, selling for one cent per copy and launching what would become one of the most prominent newspapers in world history.

1961: The Death of UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld – UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld was killed today in a mysterious plane crash near Ndola, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia), while en route to negotiate a ceasefire in the Congo Crisis.

1970: The Death of Jimi Hendrix – Legendary rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix died in London today at age 27, asphyxiating on his own vomit following an accidental overdose of sleeping pills and alcohol.

1931: The Mukden Incident – Japanese officers detonated a small charge of dynamite on a Japanese-owned railway near Mukden, China today. Accusing Chinese dissidents of the attack, Imperial Japan used the false-flag operation as a pretext to invade and occupy Manchuria.
