1812: The Bloody Carnage at Borodino – Napoleon Bonaparte’s Grand Armée clashed with the Imperial Russian Army in the single deadliest day of the Napoleonic Wars. Fought just west of Moscow, the brutal artillery duel involved over 250,000 soldiers and resulted in an estimated 70,000 casualties in less than 24 hours.

1940: The Blitz Begins Over London – Nazi Germany officially shifted its aerial strategy against Great Britain today, launching the first massive daytime bombing raid over London. Hundreds of Luftwaffe bombers rained explosives across the city, initiating 57 consecutive nights of relentless bombardment aimed at breaking British civilian morale.

1776: The World's First Submarine Attack – During the American Revolutionary War, the Turtle—a hand-powered, egg-shaped wooden submersible piloted by Ezra Lee—attempted to attach an underwater bomb to the hull of the British flagship HMS Eagle in New York Harbor. Although the drill failed to penetrate the ship's iron fittings, it marked the very first recorded use of a submarine in active combat.

1936: The Extinction of the Tasmanian Tiger – The last known living thylacine, named Benjamin, died of neglect and exposure inside his enclosure at the Hobart Zoo in Tasmania. Left outside in extreme weather after zoo staff failed to lock him in his sheltered sleeping quarters, his death officially wiped out the world's largest modern carnivorous marsupial species.

1909: The First Airplane-Automobile Collision – History's first recorded crash between a flying aircraft and a ground vehicle occurred today in Dayton, Ohio. Pioneer aviator Orville Wright was taking off on a test flight when his plane unexpectedly lost altitude and clipped an automobile parked too close to the airfield edge.
