At just 32 years old, having conquered most of the known world, he died of a mysterious fever. Some blame malaria or typhoid, while others heavily suspect poison.

1720: The Capture of Calico Jack – The infamous English pirate captain John "Calico Jack" Rackham was captured on this day by the British Navy after a surprise raid on his ship. While Calico Jack is famous for designing the classic "Skull and Crossbones" flag, his crew was even more famous for including two of the most notorious female pirates in history: Anne Bonny and Mary Read.
