1. 1609: Henry Hudson Sails Into New York Harbor – English explorer Henry Hudson sailed his ship, the Half Moon, into the natural harbor of present-day New York City today. Believing he had found the elusive Northwest Passage to Asia, Hudson instead mapped the 315-mile (507 km) river that would later bear his name.

   

2. 1953: JFK Marries Jacqueline Bouvier – Future U.S. President John F. Kennedy married Jacqueline Lee Bouvier today at St. Mary's Church in Newport, Rhode Island. Attended by over 700 guests, the high-society wedding became one of the most publicized social events of the mid-20th century.

   

3. 1970: The Dawson's Field Plane Blowups – Members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) detonated explosives that destroyed three hijacked international airliners on an abandoned airstrip in Jordan today. Having evacuated all 310 hostages prior to the explosions, the televised destruction triggered the Black September military conflict.

   

4. 1992: Endeavour Launches Mae Jemison Into History – Space Shuttle Endeavour lifted off today on mission STS-47. On board was mission specialist Mae Jemison, who became the first African American woman to travel into space.

   

5. 1857: The Sinking of the S.S. Central America – The steamship S.S. Central America, carrying over 500 passengers and 30,000 pounds of California Gold Rush gold, sank in a Category 2 hurricane off the coast of North Carolina today. 425 people lost their lives, and the vast loss of gold helped trigger the Panic of 1857 economic crisis.
