1776: Renaming the Union – The Continental Congress officially declared today that the united collective of former colonies would no longer be referred to as the "United Colonies," officially changing the nation's name to the "United States of America."

1839: The First Glass Plate Photograph – English scientist and astronomer John Herschel successfully took the world's very first photograph on a glass plate today. The technique allowed for vastly sharper image detail and vastly improved longevity compared to previous fragile paper and metal photographic processes.

1947: The First Literal Computer "Bug" – Computer scientist Grace Hopper and her team at Harvard University recorded the world's first actual computer bug today. While troubleshooting the Harvard Mark II electromechanical computer, operators pulled a dead, two-inch moth out of Relay #70, taping the insect directly into the logbook with the entry "First actual case of bug being found."

1739: The Stono Rebellion – The largest slave uprising in the British mainland colonies broke out in South Carolina today. Led by an enslaved Angolan man named Jemmy, a group of heavily armed rebels marched toward Spanish Florida—which promised freedom to escaped slaves—before being intercepted and overwhelmed by a local militia in a fierce battle.

1892: The Discovery of Amalthea – Astronomer Edward Emerson Barnard discovered Jupiter's fifth moon, Amalthea, through the 36-inch telescope at Lick Observatory today. It was the first moon of Jupiter discovered since Galileo's observations in 1610, and the very last natural satellite in history found by direct visual observation rather than through photographic analysis.
