Today I will share with you guys 5 things that happened on this day, 13th June, in the history of the world

1. 1789: The Tennis Court Oath – Finding themselves completely locked out of their official meeting hall by King Louis XVI, the newly formed National Assembly of French commoners broke into a nearby indoor tennis court today. They swore a historic collective oath never to disband until they had written a brand new constitution, effectively sparking the French Revolution.

   

2. 1893: The Lizzie Borden Acquittal – Following a sensational, highly publicized trial that captivated the nation, a jury in New Bedford, Massachusetts, officially acquitted Lizzie Borden of the brutal axe murders of her father and stepmother today. Despite her legal release, she remained a social outcast for the rest of her life, forever tied to the infamous crime.

   

3. 1975: The Birth of the Summer Blockbuster – Steven Spielberg’s thriller Jaws opened in a record-setting 409 theaters across North America today. Accompanied by an unprecedented, aggressive television advertising blitz, the movie terrified millions of beachgoers, smashed all previous box office records, and permanently changed how Hollywood markets summer movies.

   

4. 1942: The Auschwitz Staff Car Escape – In one of the most daring prison breaks in military history, Polish prisoner Kazimierz Piechowski and three others successfully escaped from the Auschwitz concentration camp today. The men broke into a storage room, stole full SS officer uniforms, loaded up an arsenal of weapons, and boldly drove the camp commandant's personal staff car right through the main security gate.

   

5. 1963: Setting Up the "Red Telephone" – Following the terrifyingly close call of the Cuban Missile Crisis, the United States and the Soviet Union signed a formal agreement today to establish the Hot Line communication link between Washington, D.C., and Moscow. Contrary to popular pop culture belief, it wasn't a red telephone at all, but a highly secure teletype machine system designed to prevent an accidental nuclear war.
