Today I will share with you guys 5 things that happened on this day, 17th June, in the history of the world

  1. 1579: The Secret Claim on California – English explorer Sir Francis Drake dropped anchor somewhere in northern California today, naming the region Nova Albion (New Britain) and claiming it entirely for Queen Elizabeth I. He secretly nailed an engraved brass plate to a wooden post to solidify the territory before sailing away, triggering a centuries-long historical hunt for his exact landing spot.

  2. 1885: The Statue of Liberty Arrives – The French frigate Isère sailed into New York Harbor today carrying the disassembled pieces of the Statue of Liberty. Packed inside 214 heavy wooden crates, the iconic monument arrived without its pedestal, which wasn't actually finished yet because the United States had run out of public funds to build it.

  3. 1928: Amelia Earhart's Historic Takeoff – Aviator Amelia Earhart took off from Newfoundland today aboard a Fokker F.VII tri-motor aircraft named Friendship. While she was technically just a passenger keeping the logbook on this specific flight, the successful 20-hour crossing made her the first woman to ever fly across the Atlantic Ocean.

  4. 1894: The Injection of the First Antitoxin – In the midst of a terrifying diphtheria epidemic sweeping through Europe, a young girl in a Berlin hospital was successfully treated with an experimental antitoxin serum today. Developed by scientist Emil von Behring, the treatment marked the first time a human patient was saved from a deadly disease using immunity transferred from an animal.

  5. 1940: The Sinking of the RMS Lancastria – The British troopship Lancastria was bombed and sunk by German aircraft off the coast of France today while evacuating thousands of soldiers and civilians. The disaster resulted in an estimated 4,000 to 6,500 deaths—more than the Titanic and Lusitania combined—making it the single deadliest maritime disaster in British history.
