1. 1792: The Theft of the Hope Diamond – Six thieves broke into the Royal Storehouse in Paris during the chaos of the French Revolution today and stole the French Crown Jewels. Among the looted treasures was the "French Blue," a massive 67-carat diamond that was later re-cut and surfaced decades later as the notoriously cursed Hope Diamond.

   

2. 1857: The Mountain Meadows Massacre – A localized Mormon militia, disguised as Native Americans, ambushed a California-bound emigrant wagon train in southern Utah today. Over 120 unarmed men, women, and children were slaughtered in cold blood to prevent word of local territorial hostility from reaching federal troops.

   

3. 1973: The Chilean Coup d'État – Chilean military forces led by General Augusto Pinochet launched a violent overthrow of President Salvador Allende today. As the presidential palace was bombed by jet fighters, Allende died inside, initiating a brutal 17-year dictatorship.

   

4. 1941: Groundbreaking on the Pentagon – Construction began on the headquarters for the U.S. Department of War today on a swampy plot in Arlington, Virginia. Built at breakneck speed during WWII, the massive five-sided concrete complex was fully completed in under 16 months.

   

5. 2001: The September 11 Terrorist Attacks – Nineteen Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners in a coordinated assault on American soil. Two planes were flown directly into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, a third struck the Pentagon, and a fourth crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania after passengers fought back, resulting in nearly 3,000 deaths and permanently altering global geopolitics and aviation security.
