1. 1504: The Unveiling of David – Michelangelo’s iconic 17-foot (5,1 meter) marble masterpiece was officially unveiled to the public in Florence today. Sculpted from a single, flawed block of Carrara marble that two previous artists had abandoned as unusable, the statue was placed outside the Palazzo della Signoria as a bold symbol of Florentine civil liberty.

   

2. 1900: The Galveston Hurricane Catastrophe – The deadliest natural disaster in United States history struck the island city of Galveston, Texas today. A Category 4 hurricane brought a terrifying 15-foot (4,5 meter) storm surge that completely submerged the low-lying barrier island, destroying thousands of buildings and killing an estimated 6,000 to 12,000 people.

   

3. 1966: Star Trek Debuts on Television – NBC broadcast the very first episode of Gene Roddenberry's sci-fi series Star Trek today ("The Man Trap"). Featuring a groundbreakingly diverse crew aboard the USS Enterprise, the show initially struggled with low ratings, but eventually spawned a massive, multi-billion-dollar media franchise.

   

4. 1819: The Vauxhall Garden Balloon Riot – An angry crowd of over 50,000 spectators destroyed an amusement park in Philadelphia today after balloonist Monsieur Guille failed to launch his massive hot air balloon due to technical issues. Enraged by the delays and suspecting fraud, the mob stormed the grounds, tore the balloon to shreds, and burned the entire facility to the ground.

   

5. 1921: The Birth of the Beauty Pageant – 16-year-old Margaret Gorman was awarded the Golden Mermaid trophy at the Atlantic City Pageant today. Organizers originally created the event as an autumn promotional gimmick to keep tourists at the boardwalk past Labor Day, but they officially crowned Gorman as the world's very first "Miss America" the following year.
