WarEra Journal - Running a Country in WarEra: The Belgium Experience

KoivuApril 11, 2026politics

All nations in WarEra are more than just a flag, a map, or a collection of stats. Behind each one of these countries stands real people, players who build systems, negotiate alliances, argue over laws, and try to shape a digital society that feels alive. When you talk to them, you quickly realize that these virtual governments aren’t just game mechanics; they’re reflections of creativity, frustration, ambition, and community.

That’s why I felt inspired to bring you all a series of interviews with countries willing to share their take on governance and show a glimpse into their society.

I would like to underline here that answers are not in any shape or form AI Generated slope, appreciate the effort put by the participants to deliver those answers.

1. Government Structure & Philosophy

 Understanding the architecture

What core principles guided you when designing the governmental structure of Belgium in WarEra?

I think fun has to be number 1. I mean it’s a game afterall and I can’t describe how much fun we have in the discord making memes and trolling each other. On a more serious note I would say participation. It’s lovely to see the entire chat going crazy when someone calls he’s going in with a tank. The feeling of we’re all in this together and a family like sphere is our pillar.

In your opinion how closely does the system mirror real‑world Belgian governance, and if you diverge, where?

Oh please no we try to stay away from real life Belgium and our 7 governments. Belgium is however known for strong diplomacy and expressing opinions with well built arguments. I think that is represented in-game and recognised by our allies as well as our enemies.

What problems or inefficiencies in other systems were you trying to avoid?

slow decisionmaking and governments so complicated you need a PhD to understand them. Belgium needs to be a machine that runs smoothly, keeps people involved, and doesn’t collapse the moment someone forgets their password. This again refers to our family spirit and engagement.

Do you try to balance realism with playability?

Of course I try to balance realism with playability. It’s still a game, nobody wants to read a 19‑page manifesto just to propose a law. But most of us enjoy taking it seriously enough that the country actually functions well and people know what we’re doing. It’s that sweet spot where structure meets fun, and Belgium feels alive instead of bureaucratic.

 Institutional design

What are the key institutions in the government, and how do they interact?

The government runs on ministers and congress members. All ex-ministers and congressmembers have a say in current politics as well and we call the shots to our people. We take any concerns of our citizens seriously and try to explain why and how everything always happens.

Are there any internal mechanisms beside game mechanics to prevent power concentration or political stagnation?

There’s a lot of encouragement for new congress and government blood. Stagnation is prevented by still giving ex-congress and ministers some power. That way they don’t need to run again and give new people the chance while still remaining active themselves.

How do you ensure transparency and accountability within the system?

We have our own newspaper that keeps people up to date. Every action Belgium does is under full commitment of the government everything happens in the open. Decisions are explained, actions are visible, and if someone makes a mistake, we don’t hide it, we just laugh, fix it and move on. We still have concrete from when I was MoE.

 2. Functioning of the Government

 Day‑to‑day operations

What does a typical “government day” look like for Belgium?

Making memes, discussing, drinking beer and then discussing again. We’re a little bit like the old Roman Empire did you know they first debated sober, calm, logical, very serious. Then they revisited the same topic while drunk, because they believed wine revealed truths that caution hid. If an idea survived both the sober test and the drunken test, they considered it solid.

Which ministries are the most active, and why?

Work done? everyone with international relationships really, Presidents,VP,MoFA but also our ex-presidents,VPs and MoFa’s. But to be fair a lot of people are really active in the entire congress as well as all citizens on the discord. You should see it on a Friday night. It's the most vibrant place on earth.

How do you coordinate communication between ministries, Congress, and the military units?

It just gets communicated in one of the 2000 channels we have on our discord very clearly.

 Law‑making & decision‑making

How does the legislative process work from proposal to implementation?

1 of our 2000 discord channels is a voting-chamber. Once we have a green light we act fast and implement it.

What types of laws have/had the biggest impact on the nation’s development?

Not really laws but getting people to the game and join your nation has the biggest impact of course.

How do you handle disagreements or political deadlock?

Democracy prevails, we simply vote.

 Diplomacy & alliances

What is the diplomatic philosophy of Belgium in WarEra?

Belgium’s diplomatic philosophy is built on trust and clarity. With us, you always know what you’re getting. We’re straightforward, reliable, and just charming enough to make diplomacy feel like a friendly chat.

How do embassy channels influence foreign policy?

We have our own agenda but we’re always open for a talk. Sometimes it’s possible to do something for them, sometimes it’s not. We try to take as much as possible into account when making a decision.

Can you describe a moment when diplomacy significantly changed the nation’s trajectory?

After our important victory in the Rhine battle against Germany 2 months ago it was the first time the world really looked up to Belgium. Holding on to the German regions then would’ve been stupid and stubborn. Instead we made an important agreement to release them as they were having their first baby boom. We hoped they could get rid of their old government and start a new Germany under their new people who we had no problems with and didn’t want to hold back.

Economy & Economic Policies

How would you describe your nation’s overall economic philosophy in WarEra (e.g., interventionist, free‑market, mixed)?

With a Vice President as LouisG-Boulanger I have to say free-market.

What principles guide your decisions when balancing growth, stability, and military needs?

Growth is the most important thing. I see countries literally throwing babies at the battlefield. I don't think I need to describe how that ends. We asked recently for a big mobilization but only to those who have their eco on point.

What role do international markets, alliances, and global trade networks play in your macro‑economic planning?

As part of an alliance you are fighting on all fronts. That includes the economical market as well.

3. Military & Strategic Governance

 Defense structure

How is the Belgian military organized, and what makes it unique?

We recently organised our MU’s by strength so that way we minimize the resources lost for HQ. The most unique aspect? 25 little smurfs marching and stomping on our enemies victoriously.

What role does the government play in coordinating military units during wartime?

We guide them of course. Orders come from the government they are highest in rank. MU commanders act on those and I have to say I’m really impressed by how well and serious they took the role as MU commander.

How do you balance military priorities of players with economic ones ?

Eco first war later It’s all in my PERFECT ECONOMIC GUIDE. Sacrificing a lvl 15 for some damage on a battlefield how gruesome we could never.

 Geopolitical strategy

What is Belgium's long‑term strategic vision in the WarEra world?

That you would like to know hmm? I think the most important goal is keeping it engaging and fun. If people want war we give them war.

How do you prepare for large‑scale conflicts or regional instability?

Good eco first then good communication. Well organised requests from the government goes a long way.

 4. Society & Everyday Life of Citizens

 Social structure

How would you describe the “Belgian identity” within WarEra?

I can go on and on about this one. calm on the outside, fries on the inside.
We’re a nation that can’t agree on a language but can absolutely agree on snacks. We take pride in being friendly, slightly confused and powered almost entirely by mayonnaise. Our culture is a mix of surrealism, good food and the ability to stay chill even when everything is on fire. The recent march of the smurfs is only one example of our culture being represented in the in game identity. There are a lot of real life politicians roleplayers even entire parties about what color the country should be.

What expectations do citizens have of their government?

Communication and entertainment. They want to do cool things and have a lot of questions they want answers on.

How do new players integrate into Belgian society?

Everyone applauds them for joining. The first hello of a new player gets at least 20 likes. We encourage them to ask their noob questions, join the discord and have fun!

 Economy & work life

What industries or economic activities define everyday life for Belgium citizens?

Click buttons talk shit in chat.

How does the government support entrepreneurship, workers, and new companies?

We encourage our people to work locally. The “kleine zelfstandigen” don’t have it easy these days. And companies? the more the better.

What economic challenges do citizens face most often?

Getting fired by their employer. Really harsh sometimes.

 Culture & community

What do you think makes the Belgian community unique compared to other nations?

The fact that our mother-tongue is Dutch or French yet we speak English in chat.

How do social norms or traditions shape political and military behavior?

Our tradition is beer. We’re a country where people will argue passionately for 20 minutes, then instantly forgive each other the moment someone says, ‘Pintje?’

Meetings run smoother because nobody wants to be the reason the group arrives late at the café. Military discipline? Just remind everyone that the sooner the job’s done, the sooner we can go drink a beer.
Beer isn’t just a drink here. It’s a lifestyle, a peace treaty, a motivational tool and sometimes the only reason people show up on time. It keeps us friendly, keeps us patient and keeps us from taking anything too seriously.

Are there any cultural rituals, memes, or inside jokes that define the community?

Way too many to sum up I feel like the comment section will be full of it so go take a look there and you’ll have your answer on this question.

5. Challenges, Innovations & Future Vision

System evolution

What parts of the governmental system have changed the most since its creation?

Almost every legislation there has been hammered on transparency and I think it’s gotten quite decent lately. The discord is an ever expanding tool that has become a real maze.

What were the biggest challenges in designing or maintaining the system?

Not getting lost in the maze our Discord is.

Are there any reforms or innovations you’re planning for the future?

The MU reshuffle was our latest big innovation for now we’re focused on the war and guiding new people with their first war experience.

 Long‑term vision

Where do you see Belgium in WarEra five months from now?

I don’t really know. I still think we will be a diplomatic strong nation with a lot of experienced players. Hopefully our player total has risen a lot. It’s dumb to make wild predictions on a geopolitical terrain so the only thing I am sure of is we will still be really close to our northern neighbours The Netherlands.

What do you hope your governmental architecture will inspire in other nations?

To think twice before acting, to communicate and don’t act on your own and for your own. This can be applied on so many levels in such a social game as this one there really is no place for ego’s nor for 1 country dictating. Here we say keep your feet on the ground. Don’t go floating or acting like you’re bigger than anybody else and stay humble.
