Before a battle, two questions matter, and they are not the same question. Who hits harder, and who is still standing in the third hour. Matchup answers both, from the rosters as they are right now.

Each side is picked on its own: a country, a military unit, or an alliance. Nothing stops you from putting a unit against a country, and sometimes that is exactly the question.
Countries and units load their live roster from the game, member by member.
An alliance loads every member nation and sums them. Large ones warm up nation by nation, and the ones still loading are marked, so a half filled total never passes for a finished one.
The address carries both sides. A comparison is a link, and the map links here from a country panel: your home against whoever you clicked.
Nobody is comparing last week's roster, because there is no stored roster to compare.

One line at the top says who fields more steel and by how much. Under 1.15 times it says DEAD EVEN instead of naming a favourite, because a difference that small is noise.
The number behind it is the damage potential of everyone AWAKE, which is the honest population for a battle that starts today. Two more numbers stand next to it, and they are worth more than the headline:
Online now. Not who could fight this week, but who is at the screen this minute.
The war-skilled ceiling. What the same people would do if every skill point sat in damage. The gap between that and the real number is how much of a side is economy, and against an economy nation it is enormous.

A total hides its own shape. Twenty steady fighters and one whale reach the same number and lose very differently, so every warrior is listed under the forecast, sortable, with the state each of them is in.
BATTLE READY is energy at 80 % or more, full damage right now. SPIRITS HIGH is 40 to 79 %, fights but not at full force. WORN OUT is under 40 %, little left in the tank.
HUNGRY is hunger under 20 %, which slows regeneration, and it is the state a commander can actually fix in the next ten minutes.
AWAKE is a login within five days, ONLINE within the last hour, ASLEEP is over five days or level 10 and below: those do not fight, and they are not counted in the forecast.
The build column says what the points were spent on: war, loot, hybrid or eco. Measured across the stored citizens, a loot build at level 25 to 29 does 0.18 of a pure war build's weekly damage, and at level 45 and up 1.02. A hybrid stays near a sixth of a warrior in every band. A roster that reads twelve hybrids as twelve fighters overstates itself sixfold, which is why the column is there.

Click any warrior and the full dossier opens: gear, buffs, the damage per hit, and what they carry.

The battle sim is the second half of the page. Pick a live battle and both sides load themselves, attacker and defender, with the buffs and debuffs of that battle applied. SIDE forces one side, AUTO resolves it per warrior from the battle data.
Then change the kit and press apply. The roster stays, the equipment does not.
The pill has three states, and all three are worth looking at. ACTUAL keeps whatever pill or cooldown penalty each warrior carries right now, which is what would really happen if the battle started this minute. ON puts everyone on a fresh one, plus 60 % battle damage, cooldowns ignored: the ceiling. OFF strips pills and penalties: the floor. The gap between ON and OFF is the value of your logistics, in damage.
Ammo and food arm everyone the same way, knife included, which is how you find out what a supply run is worth before you pay for it.
Gear fields a full set of one rarity on both sides. Set both to common and the comparison is skill against skill, with every purse taken out of it.
The engine underneath is the same one that powers the player pages and the Discord commands, so a number here and a number there cannot disagree.
A forecast is a projection from damage potential, not prophecy. It does not know who will show up, who will spend energy on a different front, and it does not model the rounds of the battle itself.
What it does know is the part that is knowable in advance, and that part decides more battles than most people admit: how many awake fighters each side has, how well fed they are, and what they carry.
