WARERA.UNIKHORNE: The Order Book

The market screen gives you a price. It does not tell you whether that price is for ten units or ten thousand, and that is the difference between a trade and a surprise.

THE BEST TEN WERE HIDING MOST OF IT

Until this week the suite asked the game for the ten best offers per side, because that is what the API hands out when you do not ask for more. It turns out it takes a limit, and it goes to a hundred.

The difference is not small. Measured on 8 September, sell side, the whole visible book against what the best ten showed:

  • Iron: 874,407 units on offer. The best ten showed 25,158. That is thirty-five times more goods than were visible before.

  • Cocain: 1,566 units. The best ten showed 61.

  • Case I: 6,663 units against 296.

  • Steel: 34,890 units against 3,558.

Same market, same moment. The price never changed; what changed is how much of it you can see.

WHAT THE DEPTH ACTUALLY TELLS YOU

Per side the page now shows how many orders are open, how many units they hold, what they are worth together, the price range from lowest to highest, and the weighted average. Switch between 10, 25, 50 and 100.

Three things become readable that a single price cannot say.

How much you can buy before you move the price. Walk up the sell side and add it up. On 8 September, steel: 10,364 units within one percent of the best ask, 34,146 within five. Iron: 638,813 within one percent. Cocain: 1,126 within one percent, and the entire book is 1,566. A tight spread on a thin book is not a good price, it is a small one.

Where a market ends. Case I had 6,663 units for sale, all of them within one percent of the best ask. Buy the lot and you have bought every case anyone is selling. Cocain showed a spread of 0.0 percent, which reads like a liquid market until you see 1,566 units behind it.

Which orders are not real. The buy side of Case I ran from 3.578 down to 1.00, grain and petroleum down to 0.001. Those are not bids anyone expects to be filled; they are parked. In a ten-deep view you never saw them, and the total demand looked cleaner than it is.

WHAT IT CANNOT DO

A hundred is the ceiling, and it is the game's, not ours. Ask for 101 and the API refuses with its own words: maximum 100. There is no paging past it either; seven different parameter names for an offset are accepted and then quietly ignored, all returning the same first hundred.

So for a quiet good that is the whole book, and the page says so. For iron or steel it is the cheapest hundred offers and no further, and there the totals are labelled as a floor rather than passed off as a sum. A number called "total value" that is not one would be worse than no number.

Equipment has no order book at all. That endpoint refuses API tokens, rechecked this week over both routes. For weapons and armour the suite shows realised sale prices instead, which answer what something went for, not what is being asked.

WHERE THE OTHER HALF LIVES

This is the current market: what is being asked for, right now, and how much stands behind it.

What was actually paid, by whom, to whom, is a different question and a different page. Trades has the recorded stream with both sides of every deal, the largest single trades, and the history of any good or any party.

One page for what the market wants. One for what it did.

DEUTSCH

  • Case I: 6.663 Stück gegen 296.

  • Steel: 34.890 Stück gegen 3.558.

Gleicher Markt, gleicher Moment.

WAS DIE TIEFE DIR WIRKLICH SAGT
