WarErZA has reported from capitals, crossed borders and encountered enough questionable military decisions that this one has learned not to ask too many questions before accepting an assignment.

This one has even become accustomed to commanders with impressive titles.

Emperor of Mankind, however, was new.

Khajiit checked the notes twice.

Apparently, that was not a typo.

For the next stop in Behind the Tags, this one turns his attention to https://app.warera.io/mu/6973930D099ABA6390DDD033— the Imperium of Man, a South African military unit with an Emperor at its head, Imperial officers beneath him and ambitions extending considerably further than the borders of /country/683ddd2c24b5a2e114af1612.

Their stated objective?

Strengthen /country/683ddd2c24b5a2e114af1612the continent.

And eventually...

Well.

Apparently Terra is on the list too.

This one has learned not to assume they are joking.

BEFORE THERE WAS AN IMPERIUM

Every empire must begin somewhere.

For https://app.warera.io/mu/6973930D099ABA6390DDD033, it began considerably more simply than the Imperial proclamations might suggest.

It began with https://app.warera.io/user/69edff69068981e2639455d8.

/user/69edff69068981e2639455d8began playing WarEra, but the banners of the Imperium did not immediately follow. There was no Emperor of Mankind sitting upon the Golden Throne in those earliest days.

The Warhammer identity came later.

Much of the community surrounding the young MU had originally gathered around /user/69edff69068981e2639455d8 through his YouTube channel. When the group began building a political party inside WarEra, they needed an identity.

/user/69edff69068981e2639455d8 was already the leader.

Several members were already Warhammer 40K fans.

Someone evidently looked at the situation and reached the only reasonable conclusion.

Make him Emperor.

And thus /user/69edff69068981e2639455d8 became the Emperor of Mankind.

The name stuck.

Then came the titles.

Then came the Imperial proclamations.

Then came the politics.

And somewhere along the way, a military unit became the Imperium of Man.

WELCOME TO THE IMPERIUM

The Imperium does not merely have political offices.

It has an Imperial court.

The President is the God Emperor.

The Vice President becomes Malcador the Sigillite, trusted steward of the Imperium.

The Minister of Defence becomes Horus the Warmaster, charged with directing its armies.

Even the economy receives the appropriate Imperial treatment because, as https://app.warera.io/mu/6973930d099aba6390ddd033 itself once rather sensibly explained:

Someone has to pay for the tanks.

The further one ventures into Imperial territory, the less useful ordinary South African political terminology appears to become.

But there is an important distinction behind all the ceremony.

According to https://app.warera.io/mu/6973930d099aba6390ddd033, joining does not require memorising several decades of Warhammer lore before someone hands you a rifle.

Participation in the Imperial roleplay is not mandatory. Some members embrace it, while others simply play WarEra normally. The wider community itself grew largely around https://app.warera.io/user/69edff69068981e2639455d8 YouTube community rather than Warhammer alone.

What https://app.warera.io/mu/6973930d099aba6390ddd033 says it asks of its members is considerably simpler:

Be active.

Help when needed.

Contribute to the unit.

Support its growth.

Fight when called.

And work toward the objectives of the Imperium.

BENEATH THE AQUILA

Remove the titles, proclamations and occasional threats involving heretics, and https://app.warera.io/mu/6973930d099aba6390ddd033 describes itself in fairly straightforward terms:

Military-focused.

Expansionist.

Organised.

Competitive.

Its leadership wants a stronger South African military capable of territorial expansion across Africa, supported by the organisation, diplomacy and economy required to sustain it.

There is also an enemy considerably more terrifying than any army.

Border gore.

The Imperium wants less of it.

Its preferred solution is perhaps unsurprisingly Imperial:

Make the borders larger.

Organisation matters.

Diplomacy matters.

Community matters.

Economics matters.

A campaign that cannot be supplied cannot continue. Territory that cannot be defended does not remain yours for very long.

Someone has to pay for the tanks.

The Warhammer identity gives all of this considerably more dramatic packaging, but the expansionist objectives themselves are genuine https://app.warera.io/mu/6973930d099aba6390ddd033 positions rather than simply part of the performance.

Whether the rest of /country/683ddd2c24b5a2e114af1612 shares that vision is another question entirely.

The Imperium has certainly made clear what it wants.

THE FIRST IMPERIAL CAMPAIGNS

People were beginning to notice the Imperial banners.

The Imperium had arrived.

Naturally, things could not remain sensible forever.

THREE MILLION REASONS TO READ THE CONTRACT FIRST

Somewhere within the Imperial archives is a story future generations of Administratum officials will presumably be instructed to file somewhere extremely difficult to find.

A contract. Three million.

An enemy. An ally.

And a substantial portion of the Imperium suffering under debuff.

According to https://app.warera.io/mu/6973930d099aba6390ddd033 own account, one of its commanders accepted a three-million contract to fight for an enemy against an ally.

The contract did not go particularly well.

In fact, it failed.

https://app.warera.io/mu/6973930d099aba6390ddd033 subsequently found itself with negative reputation.

Repairing that Imperial miscalculation required money, and the commander responsible ultimately contributed funds toward buying the reputation back—while several other members also ended up contributing.

There are probably important military lessons to be extracted from this event.

This one has identified at least one:

Check which side the ally is on before accepting three million.

The Imperium survived.

The reputation was repaired.

The Emperor still had an army.

And somewhere, presumably, one commander learned to read the diplomatic map very carefully before pressing buttons.

AN IMPERIUM IS MORE THAN AN EMPEROR

For all the attention naturally drawn toward the Emperor, https://app.warera.io/mu/6973930d099aba6390ddd033 is not a one-man empire.

Behind him sits a core group taking responsibility for much of the military unit's political and social machinery.

But none of it means much if nobody shows up when the fighting starts.

OUTSIDE THE IMPERIAL WALLS

There is another part of the https://app.warera.io/mu/6973930d099aba6390ddd033 story that does not fit quite as neatly onto an Imperial banner.

https://app.warera.io/mu/6973930d099aba6390ddd033 describes itself as open to players regardless of whether they know Warhammer or participate in its roleplay.

At the same time, its community did not originate within the broader South African WarEra community. Much of its membership arrived through an already-established community surrounding /user/69edff69068981e2639455d8 and his YouTube channel.

That distinction has not gone unnoticed.

Some within the wider South African community have questioned how fully https://app.warera.io/mu/6973930d099aba6390ddd033 has integrated beyond its own circle, particularly as the Imperium has moved further into South African military and political life.

That observation does not by itself tell us whether https://app.warera.io/mu/6973930d099aba6390ddd033 is isolated, misunderstood, still integrating, or simply comfortable maintaining its own community.

It does, however, highlight an interesting contrast.

To accomplish that, it may eventually need to convince people beyond the Imperial walls to share that vision. Behind the Tags would be doing a poor job if this one only reported what was written on the banners.

FOR SOUTH AFRICA

https://app.warera.io/mu/6973930d099aba6390ddd033 says its ambitions are ultimately intended to benefit https://app.warera.io/country/683ddd2c24b5a2e114af1612, not simply the Imperium itself.

Its leadership envisions /country/683ddd2c24b5a2e114af1612 capable of projecting greater force abroad, conquering and holding additional territory and benefiting economically and strategically from that expansion.

https://app.warera.io/mu/6973930d099aba6390ddd033 also hopes that other South African parties and military units will eventually support, or join, that direction.

Not everyone is convinced.

The scale of https://app.warera.io/mu/6973930d099aba6390ddd033 ambitions, its relatively separate community and its growing political involvement have raised questions within parts of /country/683ddd2c24b5a2e114af1612 about who ultimately benefits from the Imperial project.

At present, those are competing views rather than a settled answer.

But what kind of relationship will it build with the country it intends to strengthen?

THIS ONE HAS ONE SMALL CONCERN

There is, however, something this investigation has uncovered that troubles this correspondent.

At first, Khajiit did not notice it.

Then it appeared again. And again.

The Imperium speaks frequently of humanity.

The Emperor of Mankind.

Humanity United.

Humanity Victorious.

Perfectly respectable slogans.

Mostly.

Unfortunately, this one continued reading.

And discovered another word.

Xenos.

Khajiit investigated. Khajiit regrets investigating.

This presents something of a professional difficulty.

WarErZA has sent a Khajiit war correspondent to investigate an organisation called the Imperium of Man, led by the Emperor of Mankind, whose proclamations contain enthusiastic references to humanity, heretics and xenos.

This one is beginning to suspect nobody at the newsroom thought this assignment through.

Still. The story is written.

The notebook is full.

The Imperium has been observed.

And Behind the Tags has survived another military unit.

Probably best to leave before someone asks to see this one's species documentation.

BEHIND THE TAGS

So what actually sits behind https://app.warera.io/mu/6973930d099aba6390ddd033?

A relatively young military unit built upon a community that existed before its Imperial identity.

A Warhammer-inspired political and military culture that its members can embrace without being required to live every moment in character.

A leadership with clear expansionist ambitions.

An early military reputation accompanied by at least one spectacularly questionable contract.

And an organisation that now faces a challenge somewhat different from winning battles.

The larger question is how that vision fits alongside the rest of https://app.warera.io/country/683ddd2c24b5a2e114af1612

The Imperium says its growth will strengthen the country around it.

Not what the banner says.

But what is standing behind it.
