"South Africa Goes Blonde in Honour of Dolly Parton"

Following the death of country music legend Dolly Parton at the age of 80, South Africa has announced the only appropriate response:

We’re going blonde.

In a solemn act of national remembrance, South Africa will be changing its country colour to blonde, honouring one of the most recognisable, beloved, and enduring figures in modern music.

For once, this is not a strategic decision.

It will not strengthen our economy. It will not improve our position on the battlefield. It will not make our enemies fear us. There is every possibility that it will, in fact, make the map considerably uglier.

But some things are bigger than strategy.

For generations, Dolly Parton was more than a singer. She was a storyteller, a philanthropist, a symbol of kindness, humour, resilience, and an almost stubborn belief in being exactly who you are.

Her songs travelled far beyond Tennessee.

And behind all of it was Dolly herself, larger than life, endlessly quotable, unapologetically glamorous, and instantly recognisable beneath that extraordinary mountain of blonde hair.

She made people laugh. She made people cry. She gave away millions of books to children. She supported communities that needed help. And for more than half a century, she reminded the world that sincerity and a little bit of ridiculousness can coexist perfectly well.
