In South Africa, there has been some negativity towards "Eco-only" players. Personally I have been treated as a a traitor by some. A selfish person, who will not contribute to the country and it's on-going wars, unpatriotic.
I would like this article to be my argument that perhaps my countries policy on this isn't the only viable position. Being an eco only player for your first 50 days, actually takes a lot of patience, and is very boring in itself. Especially taking into account the pressure in SA, to not make the jump to damage feels unrewarding. I however believe the patience with eco can lead to good overall rewards, and that perhaps the policies of the countries should encourage a few more to play this way.
I have analyzed level 15 + players.
South Africa still has a relatively young population. 126 Active players between level 15-23, but not much older than that. Therefore the majority of this analysis will focus on level 23 and under.

Compared to our recent enemies (Who have an older population) - The total wealth is substantially more. They have 131 active players above level 24 alone (Compared to South Africa's 3). Therefore again, we can't read too much into totals other than it is interesting how old the people of Romania and Portugal really are.

Finally the data of the world:

It is my belief that wealth per citizen is a good number to look at. If you have 100 citizens of 1k wealth, compared to 10 citizens of 10k wealth, each of the latter could maybe afford jets on a weekly basis due to their "eco" weeks returning substantially higher values because of the general company automation etc. I have not done the math on this particularly wacky scenario ^ but I hope you can see my point that a citizen with more wealth can actually be more valuable in total damage output over time, vs someone who is putting their total monthly income into affording a heavy ammo gun.
I think the below comparison between South Africa's wealth per citizen and the rest of the world is a very telling tale. At every level we have a lower wealth per citizen compared to Portugal & Romania and compared to the world. This will have an escalating effect.

The exception being level 20-21 which includes some high profile eco players such as Leet, Stormhazard, MrSteven, Tyr (Who is now damage), Grim etc. Tyr in fact, has already soared up the damage rankings and has done the 7th highest lifetime damage for SA players under level 20, despite staying in eco until very late.
Focusing on only damage, can be a good lifetime strategy, as many of the top damage dealers do not necessarily have a lot of wealth, and top players in wealth, do not have a lot of damage (Fish I am looking at you!). But eco players usually support in other ways, such as donations to MU and country. Donations to a country are often fed back to the fighters of a country through bounties. Portugal and Romania lost a lot this week - but they have an army of rich people to add back to the coffers if needed. These players can often donate their weekly income and stay rich (IE they are not donating their wealth!).
It is hard to say if the damage over wealth strategy will pay off. After all our country has sheer numbers on our side. 1000 spears can take down a jet for sure. My plea though is that the country be more tolerant of those who try play this game through the eco route.
After all we have hundreds of baby soldiers, how damaging can a few afk farmers really be?
